Description / Synopsis
Conant & Son, Escanaba photographers, probably took this view of the Sagola Lumber Company’s first sawmill when they had their tent pitched in Sagola in September, 1905. The endless conveyor brought the logs form the millpond into the mill. The transfer shed, located at the far right, was where the boards were sorted by variety of wood and then stacked in the yards to air dry. The planing mill can be seen at the left in the background near the millpond. Note water barrels on the sawmill rooftop in case of fire and the wire cage on the smokestack to help contain sparks. |
