W. Douglas McIntosh graduated from Northern State Normal School in 1920. While at Northern, he played baseball and was involved in the Student Army Training Corps (SATC). Baseball at Northern started in the summer of 1915 and lasted until 1923. The program ended because of bad weather and competition from city and local teams. In 1918, the United States Army established the Students' Army Training Corp (SATC). During the fall of 1918, Northern closed as a result of the Spanish Influenza epidemic and the men were quarantined in the dormitory. The SATC program ended in January 1920.
