Viola Goyen Lehtinen (born 1909) discusses growing up on a farm, her education in Gwinn schools, extracurricular activities, having to support her family after her father's early death, gender roles in her household, her family's background, daily life, attending the St. Luke's School of Nursing in Marquette, her career as a nurse at Morgan Heights Sanatarium from the 1930s to 1970, her interest in ham radio and how it helped save Morgan Heights during a fire, the effect of the Depression on her family, her memories of World War I and World War II, and why she chooses to stay in the Upper Peninsula. Her husband George Lehtinen also speaks occasionally. |
