Note

Charles Henry Hatch of Dixon, Illinois was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War. This set of letters to his brother James Hatch not only document his war experiences but also document his attempts to manage financial and familial matters long-distance, providing insight to economic and social conditions during the war. (James' son Harvey would later move to Marquette, MI, hence why his papers are in the Upper Peninsula.)
