For the first time in three years

Friday, December 19, 1890 For the first time in three years the writer visited Trout Lake the other week and was agreeably surprised to find the place so much changed for the better. For several years the lonely old depot stood by itself and for miles on either side of the lakes there were no inhabitants. Now since the construction of the Minneapolis and Soo road the place has become of some importance to the two roads, the DSS and A and the MStP and Soo lines. This summer a neat union depot has been built, and a roundhouse has been built for the Minneapolis road. There are two good hotels, the "Trout Lake House" and the "Union," both well filled with guests and having every evidence of prosperity. Trout Lake House is owned and operated by N. A. Smith and Son and Mr. Smith informed the writer that Trout Lake had become quite a summer resort, and a great many sportsmen made the place their headquarters during the hunting season. His house has enjoyed a large run of customers and we do not wonder at it as the clerk of the house is a man who considers it a pleasure to look after the welfare of the guests. There is also a good general store owned by Frits Bros. George M. Frits, the senior partner of the firm is an old resident of Newherry. He started business on a very small scale less than two years ago. Now he has worked up a considerable business and since starting has found it necessary to enlarge his premises from time to time as his increasing trade dem and ed. Mr. Frits holds several offites in the township such as treasurer and justice of the peace. The latter office in a mere nonetity as the dwellers of the burg are law abiding citizens, he has not found it necessary to uphold the majesty of one solitary case. It may be that law in after the place grows a little larger and a lawyer settles there he may find something to do in that line.
