Photograph showing the "Joseph S. Fay" waiting its turn to lock upbound in the State Lock at the Sault. Behind is its consort, the schooner "D. P. Rhodes". The "Fay" is one of the earliest of the Great Lakes bulk carriers built for the ore trade, launched in 1871. Wrecked in 1905 near 40 Mile Point Lighthouse, north of Rogers City, Michigan. Photo is inscribed on the back by Capt. George Stone: "mast of the Fay." |
