Description / Synopsis
Photograph showing the whaleback steamboat "Joseph L. Colby" leaving the Poe Lock. The ship was built in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin in 1890. In 1891, Capt. Alexander McDougall (inventor of the whaleback hull design) ran the "Colby" down several sets of rapids in the St. Lawrence River to bring her to salt-water. This photo has been color tinted. |
